What Is a CV Token?
A CV Token is an authorization token issued after a political organization completes verification with Campaign Verify. It allows a messaging provider to connect the verified political committee to the appropriate political messaging registration path.
The token is not a phone number, a messaging account, or permission to text any person. It is one part of the carrier and provider registration process used to verify who is behind political messaging traffic.
Who Typically Needs One?
Under current Campaign Verify and carrier guidance, 527 tax-exempt political organizations using political messaging through the following U.S. channels generally need a valid Campaign Verify Authorization Token:
Campaign Verify issues tokens by messaging channel. If a committee uses more than one channel, it should expect to create a separate token for each applicable channel.
- 10DLC - political messaging sent through registered 10-digit long-code routes.
- Toll-Free - verified political messaging using toll-free numbers.
- Short Code - political messaging using an approved short-code program.
When Might We Not Need a CV Token?
Not every organization that communicates about politics is a 527 political organization. Other entity types can have different registration rules. For example, Twilio states that certain 501(c) advocacy organizations do not register through Campaign Verify for A2P 10DLC and instead follow the provider's applicable nonprofit or special-use registration process.
The correct answer therefore depends on your committee or organization type, the sender being registered, and the channel FreeMessaging.ai will use for the program.
How the Token Fits Into Messaging Registration

How FreeMessaging.ai Handles the CV Token Step
The CV Token is handled during Step 2 of the FreeMessaging.ai onboarding process. The typical workflow is:
1. Confirm the campaign or committee entity and determine whether Campaign Verify is the correct verification path.
2. Confirm which messaging channel or channels will be used: 10DLC, Toll-Free, Short Code, or a combination.
3. Identify an authorized campaign representative and gather the required committee information.
4. Guide the campaign through Campaign Verify submission and identity/organization verification.
5. Receive the channel-specific authorization token after verification is completed.
6. Store and transfer the token securely to the messaging registration workflow.
7. Use the token in the applicable Twilio or messaging-provider registration step.
What If We Already Have a CV Token?
Tell FreeMessaging.ai during onboarding before creating a new token. We will confirm the token's channel, current validity, and whether it can be used for the Brand or provider registration being created for your campaign.
A token should not be assumed to work across every vendor, Brand, or messaging channel. Campaign Verify and provider rules can require a unique token for a specific channel or Brand relationship.
How Should We Handle the Token?
Treat the token as sensitive registration information. Campaign Verify advises committees not to post tokens publicly or share them broadly. Provide the token only through the secure method requested by your messaging provider or FreeMessaging.ai onboarding team.
What Happens If We Need a Token but Do Not Have One?
The campaign may not be able to complete the intended political messaging registration path until verification is finished. For A2P 10DLC, a 527 political organization without a valid Campaign Verify token does not qualify for the Political Special Use Case. Current carrier requirements also require applicable 527 organizations using Toll-Free and Short Code political messaging to have the appropriate authorization token.
Because verification can affect launch timing, FreeMessaging.ai places Campaign Verify near the beginning of onboarding rather than waiting until the messaging program is ready to send.
What Will Our Campaign Need to Provide?
The exact requirements depend on Campaign Verify and the campaign's entity type, but the onboarding process generally requires accurate committee information and an authorized representative who can complete identity and organization verification. FreeMessaging.ai will provide the campaign with the specific information checklist for the current verification cycle.
What This Means for Your Campaign
If your campaign is a 527 political organization and plans to use 10DLC, Toll-Free, or Short Code for political messaging, plan on Campaign Verify and the appropriate CV Token being part of onboarding. If you are unsure whether the requirement applies, FreeMessaging.ai will determine the correct registration path before proceeding.
